“ | Mythical Demon by Cyclic! Video on my YouTube. | ” |
―Sunix |
Sonic Wave is a 1.9/2.0 solo Extreme Demon created, hack-verified and initially published by Cyclic in 1.9 on 21 June 2015. It is an extremely difficult remake of Nine Circles. Considered one of the most difficult levels of all time during its release, Sonic Wave would remain unbeaten until, through another hacking scandal, drama and a race to complete it, it was finally verified and published by Sunix in 2.0 on 25 November 2016 and placed at #1 on the Demonlist almost immediately after getting rated, surpassing Artificial Ascent. Sonic Wave received praise for its difficulty but criticism for its unbalanced gameplay and lack of innovation in the Nine Circles design. One of the most popular Extreme Demons, Sonic Wave became the 4th most-downloaded and 5th most-liked Extreme Demon in the game and is widely considered as a cultural touchstone for the Geometry Dash community[1], separating the lower and upper echelons of Extreme Demon difficulty, and went on to inspire numerous subsequent remakes with varying difficulty and design. A sequel, Cosmic Cyclone, was hosted by Zimnyte and Riot and released in 2.1.
History[]
Creation and debates of legitimacy[]
Sonic Wave was first created when Cyclic released a preview for a new Nine Circles level with a light blue colour scheme back in mid-Update 1.9[2] (this version is now considered as Old Sonic Wave). The level was made to rival Poltergeist as the hardest Nine Circles level. The level was verified and published on 21 June 2015, shortly after being previewed; however, it was not rated since Cyclic's verification video was publicly cut after he claimed to have verified it without recording. A few players tried it, but none made much progress, progressing as far as the first ship. In July, Cyclic decided to delete the unrated level and created a buffed version with a dark blue colour scheme based on a poll posted on Korean forums where he asked users to choose among five colour schemes: black, dark blue, navy blue, yellow/green, or orange. This newly buffed version was published on 20 July 2015. This update made it far harder than Bloodbath, and this time, Cyclic had a full video without any cuts, so the level got featured for a little over two weeks.
The community debated whether this level was hacked or not, as the level was far too difficult for most players at the time. Most people accused Cyclic of hacking the level. Before 2.0, the level was replaced with a Back On Track remake, known commonly as Cyclic On Track. The level was eventually unrated through convoluted methods from the negative reception on 7 August 2015.[Note 1] In March 2016, Cyclic confessed to hacking both versions of Sonic Wave, verify-hacking the original and speed-hacking the buffdate. Shortly after, he admitted to hacking every other Demon he ever beat and quit Geometry Dash, deleting his YouTube channel that housed both verification videos.
Race to verify and remakes[]
Following Cyclic's confession in hack-verifying most of his achievements, Riot, Mefewe (both had been attempting the level since the buffdate's unveiling) and several other players attempted to become the first to beat the level legitimately.
Mefewe has been making progress since before Cyclic's confession. His first progress was on 11 October 2015, getting 24%. Ten days later, he got 64-100%. Mefewe would make good progress on Sonic Wave for a month, even adding buffs to the level. He would get 72% on this version on 8 November 2015.[3] However, Mefewe buffing Sonic Wave would soon become a fatal mistake.
Riot was getting bored of Sonic Wave and asked Viprin to make a special remake for him: Sonic Wave Infinity. This remake made the level slightly darker and used 2.0 decorations and effects. While Sonic Wave Infinity was being developed, Mefewe achieved a new best of 98% on his own buffed version of Sonic Wave on 25 March 2016,[4] which at the time was considered the worst ever fail in Geometry Dash. However, this devastating fail gained him more popularity, and he later asked FunnyGame and Serponge to create another Sonic Wave remake: Alter Sonic Wave (later renamed Sonic Wave Rebirth). This level gave Sonic Wave a fresh design while staying the same gameplay-wise. Two other players, Surv and Sunix (known as Deam at the time), were also practising, both of them making good progress.
Afterwards, Manix648 and LazerBlitz created the third Sonic Wave remake: Auditory Breaker.[5] With high-quality designs and incredibly realistic decorations, it was considered the best-decorated Sonic Wave remake by many people. Although, it lost its categorization as a Nine Circles level. Manix648 chose Surv as the verifier of this level. However, Surv eventually turned down Auditory Breaker mainly because of being the choice as the verifier of Yatagarasu. Riot also made further progress on Sonic Wave, getting a record of 96%[6], while Sunix achieved a record of 88%.[7] But soon after that, Sunix agreed to let Riot verify Sonic Wave first. However, six days after Sunix's 88% fail, Sunix finally verified Sonic Wave on 25 November 2016,[8] effectively breaking his promise with Riot.
Later, Sunix apologized to Riot and stated verifying the level was unintentional. Sunix only wanted to see how far he could get during one of his streams after removing the start position.[citation needed] However, that did not stop other players like Aurorus from being angry with him. A few days later, Aurorus made a video claiming Sunix used macros and auto-clicking hacks to verify Sonic Wave.[citation needed] Eventually, the accusations were disproved. After Aurorus withdrew his claims, Sunix became recognized as the first official player to beat Sonic Wave, boosting his popularity significantly.
Gameplay[]
- 0-8%: The level begins with a single-speed cube section with tricky timings and a short block maze that requires the player to click late to avoid hitting the blue orb in the second platform. A trigger can be clicked at the beginning spawning the level's name along with Sunix and Cyclic's icons at 28%.
- 9-18%: This part is a double-speed ship sequence with several saw-blades, which the player must avoid. There are also constant gravity and size changes with a few spikes between the sloped structures, which force the player to briefly straight-fly.
- 19-28%: This part turns the player into a short mini-cube transition where the player must hit a gravity orb precisely after being bounced by several gravity pads. The player then transits into a slow ball section mainly composed of precise timings. The player later hits a single-speed trigger and then a double-speed trigger, making it harder to time the gravity changes. The player then enters a dual-mini-ball passage reminiscent of Windy Landscape, in which the player must switch the gravity at the exact right moment to avoid the two spikes on either side. After clearing the spikes, the player must jump right after they enter the cube portal to avoid crashing to the ceiling.
- 29-42%: This part composes of a very difficult wave part with incredibly tight spaces with several saw-blades. The player later enters a mini-wave section with a series of saw-blades, which the player must avoid by going in a certain pattern. The player then switches back to a normal wave with more tight spaces and saw-blades, then enters a dual-mini-wave section where the player must clear invisible blocks extending from the ground and ceiling.
- 43-56%: This part is composed of a difficult mini-wave section where the player must hold the space button to avoid the platform where the player must just barely avoid the spikes by barely letting go of the space bar. The player then enters a normal gravity portal with the same gameplay as before. This section is followed by a fairly open mini-wave section, with one extremely tight space at the end. The player then continues to another wave section with a fake line trolling and enters a mini-wave section where the player must click extremely fast to avoid all the saw-blades.
- 56-65%: This part includes a fairly easy cube section where the player must spam to hit all the orbs and keep jumping while the speed gradually increases. The text 'Faith...' can be seen before the next section.
- 65-77%: This part is composed of another wave section with very tight spaces and even more saw-blades, which later turns into a dual-wave where the player must precisely go in a certain direction to avoid all the invisible blocks and the spikes above and below. Then, the player turns back into a normal wave through a gravity portal and continues to avoid the spikes, saw-blades and blocks.
- 78-87%: This part begins with a half-speed mini-wave section where the player must spam to avoid the blocks below and the saw-blades above. Then, the player has to go through a tight space between slopes. The player then transitions to a memory cube section that requires precise timing and clear memorization.
- 88-100%: The last part is a triple-speed wave section with tight spaces, which changes to a mini-wave section, which includes tight spaces and saw-blades as same as before. Then, the player switches back to a half-speed normal wave segment where the player must precisely verse through the small slopes; halfway through this, the speed changes to single-speed. The player then switches into a double and later triple-speed mini-wave where the player must spam over the words 'GG Cyclic' made with blocks. At the end of the level, the player sees the words 'Riot,' 'Dual,' 'Chief,' and 'Nocta,' which represent Riot, Dual Kiki, ChiefFlurry and Noctalium, respectively, all of whom are skilled players who Sunix dedicated this achievement to.

Not to be confused with the upcoming level Sonic Wave Deluxe by ELTeam.
“ | Collab between ToshDeluxe & Rustam. Verified by me. Video & Pass on my channel. A SW Version that doesn't require 100K Attempts! buff update | ” |
―ToshDeluxe |
Sonic Wave Deluxe is an unrated 2.0 Sonic Wave Insane Demon remake created by ToshDeluxe and Rustam and published by ToshDeluxe. It remains unrated for now, although it has been a while since it was uploaded.
Gameplay[]
This level itself is a nerfed red-coloured reskin of Sonic Wave Infinity while having some slight buffs. It also uses elements from the original Sonic Wave during the second cube.
Despite the buffs, many players consider it easier than the original Sonic Wave due to the amount of nerfs put into the level.
Trivia[]
- Sonic Wave Deluxe is currently rated Hard due to many bots rating it Easy.
- The bots spammed the level Easy, possibly because Sonic Wave Deluxe is considered much easier than the original Sonic Wave.
Video[]
“ | HOLY SHIT! FIRST TO BEAT SONIC WAVE! 55.854 attempts! VIDEO ON MY YOUTUBE SOON! Pass on YT too! | ” |
―TheRealSneaky |
The Invincible is an unrated 2.0 Sonic Wave Extreme Demon remake created and published by TheRealSneaky. It was initially hack-verified a month before Sunix beat the original. It was legitimately verified by HSW on 17 September 2021.
Gameplay[]
The level is the original Sonic Wave update with a black-and-white colour scheme (popular for rebirths of levels) inspired by Sonic Wave Infinity. Mefewe's buffs are also included.
Trivia[]
- He has also made progress on Sonic Wave and Sonic Wave Rebirth while verifying the level as seen at the end of his verification video.
Videos[]
“ | 1st sonic wave remake as hard as sw verified. Made by Wolfen, verified by me in 9.7k att. (Changed song to normal) | ” |
―Meatius |
Sound Wave Destroyer is an unrated 2.1 Sonic Wave Extreme Demon remake created by Wolfen and XevenFurious and verified and published by Meatius. Although it remains unrated, it is the first Sonic Wave remake that matches the original's difficulty to be verified legitimately even if it is said to be easier than the original.
Gameplay[]
The gameplay is a redecorated version of Sonic Wave, with a space-blue nighttime landscape and sound spectrum/wave theme and little to no buffs. The wave segments' decorations are not like the usual Nine Circles level.
During the second cube, in the background, there is the art of a nighttime landscape with a generic city, shooting stars (obviously inspired by Sonic Wave Infinity) and regular stars.
During the third cube, an arrow appears, showing the player where to go, making it easier.
In the end, the 'GG' text appears four times, followed by the logo for Sound Wave Destroyer (the thinking emoji surrounded by Saturn's rings), with the name Wolfen, Meatius and Cyclic appearing underneath.
Trivia[]
- The music was originally called 'SummerSolsta7 - Sonic Blaster II (Fanmade) (Reupload),' which is a Sonic Blaster rework, but the song choice got a lot of hate from Meatius. Soon enough, he changed it back to the original song.
- That song's ID is 752906.
- Korean AF and Segami/Chara have made a super buff for the level. Meatius is currently trying to work on it.
- The remake's theme looks similar to Auditory Breaker, causing fans to wonder if they are the same.
- The second cube BG was designed by XevenFurious.
- Hotball1 beat it right before the original Sonic Wave, calling it an Insane Demon.

“ | The only level in the entire game. Verified by Mullsy, collab with Enlex | ” |
―Pennutoh |
Generic Wave (formerly Sonic Wave 2018) is a 2.1 Extreme Demon collaboration created by Pennutoh and Enlex, published by Pennutoh and verified by Mullsy. As its name suggests, it is a generic, joke remake of Sonic Wave and therefore has nearly identical gameplay, albeit more visible and featuring numerous moving objects.
Gameplay[]
The majority of the following gameplay description has been copied from the original level, Sonic Wave, due to having near identical gameplay.
- 0-8% (Enlex): The level begins with a single-speed cube section featuring tricky timings and a short block maze that requires the player to click at the exact time to avoid hitting the blue orb in the second platform.
- 9-17% (Enlex): This part is a double-speed ship sequence with several saw-blades that the player must avoid. There is also constant gravity- and size changes with a few spikes between the 'slopes.'
- 18-28% (Enlex): This part turns the player into a short mini-cube where they must hit a gravity orb precisely after being bounced by several gravity pads. The player then transitions into a slow ball section mainly composed of precise timings. The player later hits a single-speed trigger and then a double-speed trigger, making it harder to time the gravity changes. The player then enters a dual-mini-ball passage reminiscent of Windy Landscape, in which they must switch the gravity at the exact right moment to avoid the two spikes on either side. After clearing the spikes, the player must jump right after they enter the cube portal to avoid crashing into the ceiling.
- 29-41% (Pennutoh): This part features a difficult wave part with incredibly tight spaces featuring several saw-blades. The player later enters a mini-wave section with a series of saw-blades the player must avoid by going in a certain pattern. The player then switches back to a normal wave with more tight spaces and saw-blades, then enters a dual-mini-wave section where they must avoid a series of triangular obstacles.
- 42-54% (Pennutoh): This part composes of a very difficult mini-wave section where the player must hold the space button to avoid the platforms and the spikes by barely letting go of the spacebar. The player then enters a normal gravity portal with the same gameplay as before. This is followed by another tricky normal wave section, then a fairly open mini-wave section with one extremely tight space at the end. The player then continues to a spam-based dual-wave section with a fake line trolling, then enters a mini-wave section where they must click extremely fast and awkwardly to avoid all the saw-blades and structures.
- 55-64% (Enlex): This part includes a tricky half-speed cube section with numerous orb timings. The part transitions into a tricky double-speed robot section and finishes with a triple-speed cube section with yet more orb timings.
- 65-80% (Pennutoh): This part is composed of another triple-speed wave section with very tight spaces, which slows to half-speed after two quick gravity changes. The player turns into a dual-wave featuring spaces that are not as tight as before. Then, the player turns back into a normal wave, though upside-down and must continue to avoid the spikes, saw-blades and blocks. Halfway through, the player changes back into normal gravity. The level briefly turns to half-speed before going back to triple-speed, and the player must manoeuvre through more tight spaces while occasionally changing gravity. The player enters a half-speed mini-wave section where they must spam to avoid the blocks and saw-blades above and below. Then, the player has to go through a tight space between slopes. One of the slope parts has bugged slopes.
- 81-86% (Enlex): The player then transitions to a confusing normal- and later triple-speed memory cube section that requires precise timing and clear memorization. A brief semi-auto section brings the player to the final part of the level.
- 87-100% (Pennutoh): The last part is a triple-speed wave section with tight spaces, which changes to a mini-wave section including tight spaces and saw-blades, much like before. Then, the player switches back to a half-speed normal wave segment where they must precisely verse through the slopes and spikes. Halfway through, the speed changes to normal. The player then switches gravity shortly before entering a double- and later triple-speed mini-wave section where they must spam above blocks that spell 'GG Cernusco :).' After that, the end-screen is shown, and the level ends.
Trivia[]
- The level's password is 210317.
- The level contains 108,262 objects.
- The level's duration is 2m 2s.

- The level was rated seven months after its release.
- The level was initially placed at #7 on the Demonlist on 28 May 2019, above Spacial Rend (#8) and below Sonic Wave (#6).
- This change pushed Erebus out of the Top 10, Breakout Redux into the Extended List, and Fexty into the Legacy List.
- When Generic Wave was initially swapped with Sonic Wave, it pushed the latter off the Top 25. It was later swapped with it again.
- It is currently #16 on the High Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist, above kowareta (#17) and below Wasureta (#15).
- Many victors claim that it has annoying gameplay at the second wave and the second half.

“ | Imagine unironically remaking SW. Better, imagine actually releasing it! By Lazer & Manix, verified by Gabs. Can you feel the electricity? | ” |
―LazerBlitz |
Auditory Breaker is a 2.0/2.1 Extreme Demon collaboration created by LazerBlitz and Manix648, published by LazerBlitz and verified by Gabs. It is a remake of Sonic Wave and the most visible remake, taking Auditory Breaker out of the Nine Circles levels genre. Originally set to be a mega-collaboration with five of his friends and verified by Surv, it was referred to as the best SW remake at the time. It was dead for two years due to being unfinished and because Surv picked up Yatagarasu. In October-November 2018, LazerBlitz decided to decorate 43-88% of the level and gave it to Gabs to verify. He verified it on 7 January 2019.
Trivia[]
- The level allows copying.
- The level contains 113,795 objects.
- The level's duration is 2m 1s.
- The level was initially placed at #19 on the Demonlist on 22 May 2019, above Step To Hell (#20) and below Dark Flare (#18).
- It is currently #50 on the High Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist, above Celestial Force (#51) and below CHROMA II (#49), and #22 on the Low Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist, above Bloodbath (#23) and below Quantum Processing (#21).
- The finished version by Lazer keeps Manix's part unchanged except for an art removal. It is strange because Manix's wave uses a different effect style because of the supposed '5-player collab' rule, and 40-43% is undecorated.
- Because Gabs published it on Lazer's account, it is the first-rated SW remake.
- Meanwhile, he nerfed the level to a lower Top 10 difficulty and changed the 'GG PENIS' to a GG GABS with 'By Manix/Lazer' text.
- This is the first-ever-rated Sonic Wave remake.
- On 29 May 2021, DashY became the first player to beat Auditory Breaker on mobile, using a 120Hz phone.
- The placement of Night Rider on 9 March 2022 pushed Auditory Breaker into the Legacy List of the Demonlist.[1]

―Serponge |
Sonic Wave Rebirth (SWR & formerly Alter Sonic Wave) is a 2.0/2.1 Extreme Demon collaboration created by Serponge and FunnyGame, published by Serponge and verified by Moosh. It is a rebirth of Sonic Wave. Sonic Wave Rebirth began as a project started by Mefewe in 2016 to verify a modern, definitive version of Sonic Wave after achieving 98% on his buffed version of the level. Following Mefewe's departure from Geometry Dash, the level remained predominantly dormant for 5 years. It was later picked up by Aeden, who had the level redecorated and buffed to Top 1. Without explicit permission from Serponge, Aeden's version was considered illegitimate[1] and was later dropped. An official version with approval from Serponge and featuring few of the former buffs was verified by Moosh on 28 April 2021,[2] and epic-rated the same day, placing directly above the original level on the Demonlist.
Overview[]
A redecorated version of the original Sonic Wave update, SWR features a new design created by Serponge and FunnyGame. The level compared to the original features brighter colours, flashy effects and new design styles for the wave segments.
Gameplay[]
The original version of Sonic Wave Rebirth featured numerous buffs Mefewe had made to his version of the original level. These buffs would not be reflected in the final version of the level, whose gameplay is virtually identical to the original Sonic Wave's.
User coins[]
- The first coin is located at 8% at the end of the first cube section. It is free to collect.
- The second coin is located at 55% in the fourth cube section. It is free to collect.
- The third and final coin is located at 98% in the final cube section. It is free to collect.
Trivia[]
- The level allows copying.
- The level contains 52,482 objects.
- The level's duration is 2m 5s.
- The level was initially placed at #33 on the Demonlist on 4 May 2021, above Sonic Wave (#34) and below Spacial Rend (#32).
- This change pushed Auditory Breaker into the Extended List and Ancestral Calamity into the Legacy List.[3]
- It is currently #21 on the High Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist, above GONER (#22) and below Sonic Wave (#20).
- On 28 May 2021, DashY became the first player to beat Sonic Wave Rebirth on mobile, using a 120Hz phone.
- This is currently Serponge's only Extreme Demon and hardest published level.
- The movement of the wiener from Legacy List to #138 on 8 October 2023 pushed Sonic Wave Rebirth into the Legacy List of the Demonlist.

Sonic Wave Infinity (SWI) is a 2.0/2.1 Extreme Demon mega-collaboration hosted by Zimnyte and Riot, formerly hosted by Viprin, created by Cyclic and the members of the APTeam and verified by Xanii on 30 May 2021. It is a super-buffed remake of Sonic Wave by Cyclic and Sunix, an Extreme Demon Nine Circles level. The level was originally decorated by Viprin to be an alternative version of Sonic Wave that Riot would verify.[1] An extension made by Wabbit and Aurorus was added to the level but removed after a short time. After Riot was beaten to Sonic Wave verification by Sunix in November 2016,[2] he asked Cyclic and Sunix in succession to attempt to verify the level. Both made some progress, including a 68% run by Sunix on his Bloodlust-difficulty version.[3] Unfortunately, neither managed to beat the level.
After that, the level did not receive much attention until April 2018. Zimnyte announced that he and the APTeam were now in charge of redecorating the level,[4] buffing it to a difficulty comparable to Tartarus. Due to Sunix's inactivity, Riot passed the verification to Technical in February 2019,[5] but dropped the level a few months later, and verification transferred to Mycrafted.[6] On 20 December 2019, Zimnyte showcased the finished level for the first time.[7] Mycrafted eventually dropped the verification and handed it off to rori, who made slow progress on the level before dropping the level and the verification passing to Xanii. Xanii eventually verified the level after 60,000 attempts. Sonic Wave Infinity placed at #3 on the Demonlist before being shifted to #2, above The Golden and below Tartarus.
History[]
In June 2015, Korean player Cyclic released Sonic Wave, his new Nine Circles level. However, the level remained unrated due to a lack of a verification video, so he released a buff date in July with a proper video, and the level was rated for a short time. Players could not make much progress on the level, and many questioned Cyclic's legitimacy; this pressure from the community may have been the reason that led Cyclic to delete all his levels and quit the game.[1] After he did, many players like Riot and Mefewe made significant progress on Sonic Wave. Cyclic later returned to the game but did not talk much about the level. In March 2016, he confessed to hacking his verification of The Hell Zone, a collaboration that was a rebirth of a 1.2 level by Sohn0924 with the same name. Alongside that, he also admitted to hacking both versions of Sonic Wave, and a day later, he told Riot that he had hacked every Demon uploaded to his YouTube channel. He then proceeded to delete all his videos and seemed to quit the game for good.[1]
Meanwhile, Riot and Mefewe had been making good progress on Sonic Wave, and Riot had asked Viprin to make a redecorated and buffed version of the level that he would verify, called Sonic Wave Infinity, to increase the chances of the level getting rated by RobTop. After Mefewe got a devastating 98% fail on his own buffed version of the level, he asked FunnyGame and Serponge to do the same thing, and they made a level previously known as Alter Sonic Wave, but now known as Sonic Wave Rebirth. Since Riot seemed closer to verifying Sonic Wave Infinity than Mefewe was to verifying Sonic Wave Rebirth, they made a deal to increase the chances that both would be rated: Riot would only verify his level after Mefewe had verified his.[1] Mefewe spent a long time trying to verify his level, but never beat it, and Riot waited during this time. Riot quickly lost motivation and quit the game in June, possibly earlier. In the meanwhile, Aurorus leaked a copy in August with some extra buffs to the version he previously played (Two versions circulated at this point, one being the original copy Aurorus leaked on Riot's account and one having filters to make the level look darker, although some versions of the later have the dark filters removed).
Riot returned a few months later and announced that Wabbit and Aurorus would make an extension to the level. He said that he would try to beat the original version first rather than risk dying at the extension in Sonic Wave Infinity and missing an opportunity to beat Sonic Wave.[1] Eventually, he was beaten to it by Sunix, who verified and uploaded Sonic Wave on 25 November. Riot tried but could not verify Sonic Wave Infinity, and in January 2017, he announced that he was quitting the game again due to finger pains. He then asked Cyclic, who had returned and was now legitimate, to verify Sonic Wave Infinity. He made several good runs but also got hampered by finger pains and could not complete it. Riot has since played the version he gave to Cyclic on stream regularly, most recently in his December 2019 return stream.
In March, Riot gave a copy of Sonic Wave Infinity to KrmaL after seeing he upgraded to a 144Hz monitor. Later that same month, Sunix uploaded a progress run of 25% on a super-buffed version of Sonic Wave Infinity.[8] He said that Riot had permitted him to verify the level and that he would try to preserve its difficulty, which he said was most likely higher than that of Bloodlust. Over the next six months, he progressed more and more on the level, finally achieving a record of 68% on 9 September.[3] He did not make any more progress on the level and faded into inactivity in 2018 and early 2019.
Not much was heard of Sonic Wave Infinity until 10 April 2018, when Zimnyte uploaded a video showcasing his redecoration of the first cube part.[4] He explained that Riot had asked Zimnyte and his creating team APTeam to redecorate the level after being impressed by their first project, The Apocalyptic Trilogy. Zimnyte and his team began working on the level immediately, and he uploaded several videos throughout 2018 and 2019 showcasing the current progress.
Meanwhile, since Sunix was inactive, Riot, who recently had his YouTube channel terminated, was searching for a new verifier. In February 2019, he asked Technical if he wanted to verify Sonic Wave Infinity. He accepted, and shortly afterwards, Riot uploaded a final gameplay revision of the level on his new channel, featuring gameplay even harder than the version Sunix played on and said that the level was not going to be nerfed at all.[9] In July, Technical abruptly dropped the level, citing the possibility of future stress during verification.[10]
Riot quickly found a new verifier, Mycrafted, who practised the level on and off during his streams while waiting for the decoration to be finished. On 20 December 2019, Zimnyte showcased the full level on his channel.[11] Mycrafted started to buff the level to near-impossible difficulty, and eventually, Zimnyte posted another showcase of Mycrafted's version on 28 June 2020. However, Mycrafted had taken a break from Geometry Dash a few weeks earlier, and he eventually quit the game. Before Mycrafted quit, he stated he nerfed Sonic Wave Infinity down to kowareta's difficulty, but this would later be proven false by Mycrafted himself.[12]
On 24 July 2020, Mycrafted gave the verification to rori, as he thought that would be the best decision.[13] On 26 July 2020, rori would do a run of the final wave, also known as a 73-100% run. Roughly a month later, on 19 August 2020, rori did a 61-100% run on the level, which he would upload to his YouTube channel on 28 August 2020.[14] However, rori would go inactive on verifying Sonic Wave Infinity for about two and a half months before finally getting kicked for inactivity.
Zimnyte and Riot decided to hand off the level to Xanii, who uploaded a 59-100% run of Sonic Wave Infinity to his channel on 19 November 2020.[15] Two days later, Xanii uploaded a video titled 'I am verifying Sonic Wave Infinity. (59-100 Again),'[16] where he explains what happened to rori. Xanii stated that rori was booted from the verifier position by Riot himself for being too inactive and then proceeded to give the level to Xanii. At the end of the video, he showed himself getting 59-100% again. After playing the level for five days, Xanii began achieving progress by getting a record of 24% and another of 34% five more days later. Xanii would also upload a showcase of Sonic Wave Infinity that features the new changes he made to the level. He would continue to stream the level every single day to gain more progress, and sure enough, he would gain a new record of 40% a week after the 34% death. However, after performing a run from 24-56% (the entire first wave) and creating a video where he proved that he was not hacking Sonic Wave Infinity, he took a two-month break from Sonic Wave Infinity due to massive burnout from constantly playing the level every day.
During this break, he would beat levels such as Catalyze, Macabre, Artificial Ascent and Wasureta. Xanii would also beat other versions of Sonic Wave, such as Generic Wave and the original Sonic Wave Infinity. Finally, on 16 February 2021, Xanii would return to Sonic Wave Infinity by making it through the first wave and achieving a record of 52%. However, this section of activity would stop once again, as Xanii would take another shorter break to beat other levels like Blade of Justice, Arctic Lights and Hyper Paradox. Soon enough, his activity to Sonic Wave Infinity would turn on and off, as he would later get 54-100% but soon take another break.
At this time, Xanii started verifying WOODKID, which would take away his time playing Sonic Wave Infinity. However, after WOODKID was released as an auto-level, therefore not needing a verifier, Xanii would go back to playing Sonic Wave Infinity, but still slightly less than before due to his motivation.
It was later announced on 21 April 2021 that Riot had split from the APTeam quite a long time ago and that the version created by APTeam is no longer official. He also stated that the official version would be the original legacy version of Sonic Wave Infinity, around the same difficulty. It was set to be verified by Slithium. (He also stated that this case would be the same for Cosmic Cyclone, with the official being by Cirtrax and set to be verified by JakeEP)[17] Despite this, Xanii would continue to verify the APTeam version.[18]
After two weeks, Xanii would pick up the pace a significant amount, with him getting multiple new bests within days of each other. First, he would perform an outstanding run of 24-100%, the first wave to the end of the level. Then, after receiving 55% three times and 56% three times, Xanii would gain 57% on 5 May 2021. Then, one day after receiving 57%, he would jump further by achieving a new best of 63%. Just like the first weeks of the verifying process, Xanii would begin to stream the level every day until it gets verified. Finally, during a streaming marathon on 15 May 2021,[19] Xanii would die at the final section of the level, specifically at 76% (which is equivalent to 92-93% without the end-screen).
After Xanii died several times near the end of the level (specifically at 68%, 70%, 75% x2 and 78%), Riot would release an announcement on his Twitter account that if Xanii were to be the one to upload Sonic Wave Infinity to the Geometry Dash servers, he would reconsider making APTeam's version of the level official again.[20] But, as everyone got their hopes up, Xanii announced nine hours later that Zimnyte would not be allowing Xanii to upload the level onto his account.[21] Later, Viprin would clarify that just because a level is not official does not mean that it cannot be rated.[22] He would also state that RobTop would be more likely to rate a level uploaded by the creator of the level, which is what happened with Sonic Wave Rebirth.[23]
After a consultation with the APTeam, Zimnyte had the idea to possibly rename the APTeam version to 'Sonic Wave Eternity' instead of the iconic 'Sonic Wave Infinity' due to him believing that it would cause less confusion between Riot's official version and his version.[24] When Zimnyte asked for the community's opinion, a great number of players agreed that it would be the right decision. However, Xanii himself thought that renaming the level would simply cause all of the efforts he put into the level to disappear, and he proceeded to threaten to drop the level.[25] After careful consideration, the APTeam dropped the idea of renaming the level to 'Sonic Wave Eternity.'
Afterwards, Xanii would get a bit unlucky with the last sections of the level. Unexpectedly, on 28 May 2021, Xanii got 82%, the very last spam section in the level.[26] From this point forth, his motivation dropped significantly, and as he later stated, 'I now see why Mefewe quit.'[27] One could argue that this may be the worst fail in Geometry Dash history. Finally, on 30 May 2021, Xanii verified Sonic Wave Infinity.[28] The level was not published instantly though, as Zimnyte simply had to fix certain errors in legacy mode.
Later that day, Riot reconsidered the idea that two versions of Sonic Wave Infinity in the Top 10 on the Demonlist would be bad for top players. He also stated that the only reason that he made the APTeam unofficial was that Xanii was taking many breaks, but now that the level was verified, he cancelled his version and made the APTeam version official again.[29]
On 31 May 2021, Sonic Wave Infinity was published to APTeamOffical's Geometry Dash account, as planned. However, Xanii unexpectedly published the same level to his account as well, even though he was not permitted to. While APTeam's version was official, some members of the community wanted Xanii's version rated instead since he was the verifier and because his version had the Michigun tribute at 5%. Some users claimed that APTeam's version was not verified because it did not have the balance changes made by Xanii. The two versions of the level sparked an entire debate on whether the APTeam's deserved the rate or Xanii's deserved the rate. However, as expected, the APTeam's version was rated within a few hours.
But, just as the Geometry Dash community thought it was the end of any Sonic Wave Infinity rating drama, the level got unrated around 2 hours later, as it was discovered that there was an intentional trigger placement that caused the game to crash if the player went the wrong way during the last cube before the final wave.[30] Xanii took advantage of this and removed the trigger placement in his version in an attempt to get his version rated.[31] Xanii later stated that he added the trigger as a joke months earlier and forgot to remove it in the final release.[32] Afterwards, he decided to ask Elder Moderators to delete his version of the level because he did not want to be involved with the drama anymore.[33] Zimnyte acknowledged the crash trigger and stated on Twitter that he would remove it from the level when he got home.[34] Then, after the crash trigger was removed from the APTeam version, the level was re-rated one day later on 1 June 2021.[35]
Despite being considered an upcoming Top 1, the level did not place at the top spot on the Demonlist and was placed at #3. Several players, such as Ryth[36] and Dice88,[37] stated that the level is easier than Tartarus and Cursed even stated that the level is 'not top 3.'[38] However, other top players like Crisis stated that the level was Top 1 with no competition, stating that Sonic Wave Infinity was the hardest level he had ever played.[39]
Ryth became the first victor with 12,440 attempts on 6 June 2021, seven days after the verification.[40]
Gameplay[]
- 0-6% (Zimnyte): The level begins with a simple single-speed cube section with a few orb timings. A few spikes are protruding from parts of the pads. Some platforms force the player to time their orbs even more precisely. A short auto section transitions the player into the next section.
- 7-15% (Salamander): Next is a double-speed ship section alternating in gravity and size many times. The player must awkwardly manoeuvre around slopes, spikes and gears. Three times during the ship, the speed becomes half-speed, and the player must perform a brief mini-ship 'straight-fly' between four spikes. The part ends with a semi-auto double-speed mini-cube section with only a singular blue orb timing.
- 16-23% (Playerwombat): The player enters a half-speed ball section with a few orb timings and sloped structures. The speed then switches to normal, and the player becomes mini for four orb timings before returning to normal-size, where they must time their inputs to avoid spikes on the platforms. Similar gameplay follows after a switch to double-speed, after which there is a triple-speed dual-mini-ball section, where the player must avoid the spikes on the ground and ceiling with both icons, as at 50% in Windy Landscape. One jump as a triple-speed cube transitions the player into the next part as text saying 'Sonic Wave Infinity' briefly enters the screen.
- 24-29% (LuisLuigi + Creeper4): At the drop, there is a triple-speed wave section with flashing and pulsing decoration, as is custom with most Nine Circles levels. This part features remarkably tight spaces and two gravity portals in rapid succession to throw the player off. Most structures have spikes on the walls that make the gaps even tighter. Halfway through the part, the wave becomes mini. They must go up and down to the beat of the song to avoid the gears.
- 30-35% (LiLium11): This part features blocks extending from the structures to buff the gameplay. There are also more saw-blades and spikes on the walls. It starts with a triple-speed wave that requires plenty of awkward manoeuvring, followed by a dual-mini-wave with sloped structures and spikes on the ground and ceiling that the player must manoeuvre around.
- 36-41% (Brittank88 + Reunomi): Featuring brighter colours but fewer pulses, the next part begins with a triple-speed mini-wave segment that requires the player to let go and immediately tap to avoid the spikes on the ground and ceiling. The player has to do it many times in quick succession with a gravity change in the middle. After this, it is a normal-size wave with more awkward manoeuvring around octagonal blocks that take the place of saw-blades, followed by a mini-wave section with a bit of spam at the beginning and two extremely tight spaces formed by extending spikes at the end.
- 42-46% (IncaKola): This part features a few spam sections as a triple-speed wave with a few gravity portals in the middle. After that is a mini-wave section with more spam, followed by a part requiring extremely awkward and precise movement around awkwardly-shaped structures with protruding spikes. The part ends with brief yet tight controlled mini-wave spam around saw-blades.
- 47-54% (Destez + Requiem): This part is a cube section with many orb timings. The speed starts at half-speed but speeds up to double and triple-speed. In the original level, the orbs did not need to be timed precisely and spamming allowed the player to pass this part. However, the new version added saw-blades, forcing the player to time some of the orbs.
- 55-59% (Cynik): The player enters a triple-speed wave section not only with exceedingly tight spaces as before but with moving structures as well. The speed changes to half-speed a short way in, and the player must make three precise inputs. Following that is a triple-speed dual-wave section where the player must avoid saw-blades in the centre of the screen and spiked structures moving in from the ground and ceiling.
- 60-63% (Nahuel): Next is a triple-speed wave section much brighter than most of the other parts of the level. The player must again avoid structures and saw-blades and pass through fakes twice. After a few gravity portals, the speed changes to half-speed for a brief moment before the level returns to triple-speed with gameplay similar to the beginning.
- 64% (Pocketbuilder): In a seamless transition from the previous part, the player, as a triple-speed wave, must spam between two triangular structures with protruding spikes, after which the wave becomes mini and must again go up and down to the beat of the song to avoid the saw-blades, as in LuisLuigi's part.
- 65-67% (Cybronaut): As a half-speed mini-wave, the player must spam gradually up a slope, being careful of crashing into the saw-blades above. After a quick dip into a tight space between two structures, the player must do the same thing, except they must spam slowly downwards. After a few tight corridors at half-speed and single-speed and grey slopes covering up the structures, there is a space between some spikes and a gear that needs spam through them. The part ends with some more tight mini-wave spaces.
- 68-73% (ZeroSR): This part is a memory cube section that starts at single-speed but changes to triple-speed halfway through. The memory section consists of a series of pillars with gaps. Some are fake, and the player must remember whether to jump or fall to the next. There are also blue pads in the pillars that can change gravity and attempt to confuse them. After this, a short semi-auto half-speed cube part leads to the final gameplay part of the level.
- 74-82% (Creeper4): The player enters the final gameplay section with an exceedingly tight triple-speed wave with more spiked structures, gears and gravity portals that the player must awkwardly manoeuvre around. Partway through, the player must complete similar gameplay as the mini-wave. Following this is a half-speed normal-size wave section with a few gravity portals that require small wave movements to avoid spikes. After a similar bit at single-speed, the player finishes with some double and triple-speed mini-wave spam over gears and spiked structures.
- 83-100% (Tribar + Nickalopogas, End-Screen): The final part of the level is the end-screen, which features an intricate background and flashy effects. It starts by crediting the hosts, Zimnyte (shown as 'Zim12') and Riot and the verifier, Xanii. At the same time, their cube icon appears on the right side of the screen. Then the view pans upwards, and the background fades to black as the names of the creators of the individual parts, the end-screen (Tribar), the end-screen background (Nickalopogas) and the original level (Cyclic) scroll. Finally, the screen fades to black, and the message 'GG' appears in the bottom right corner of the screen, signalling the end of the level.
Trivia[]
- The level allows copying.
- The level contains 247,020 objects.
- The level's duration is 2m 28s.
- The level was initially placed at #3 on the Demonlist on 29 June 2021, above Zodiac (#4) and below The Golden (#2).[41]
- This change pushed Crimson Planet out of the Top 5 for the second time, Factory Realm X into the Extended List for the second time, and DARKENED into the Legacy List.
- Sonic Wave Infinity used to be the hardest Nine Circles level but lost its position to Sakupen Circles.
- Powerbomb beat an unbuffed version of the old Sonic Wave Infinity by Riot and Viprin in July 2017.[42]
- On 11 March 2021, Xanii jokingly asked the developers of Among Us to wish him luck on him verifying Sonic Wave Infinity.[43] To many people's surprise, the developers replied to Xanii's tweet stating, 'yooo good luck!!!!'[44] This later became a running joke in the community, with some stating that the Among Us developers are the only reason that Xanii verified Sonic Wave Infinity.
- Sonic Wave Infinity is part of the player-made 'New RGB series,' along with Tartarus and The Golden.
