“ | The original nerfed version of Phobos by gmtsean and more, verified legit by me. 29k+ attempts to verify. Please rate demon! :^) | ” |
―KrmaL |
Phobos is a 1.9/2.0 Extreme Demon mega-collaboration hosted by GMTSean and verified and published by KrmaL on 12 May 2016. The level was initially hack-verified by Tygrysek on 25 November 2015, with the original level considered near-impossible; the level was later nerfed. As the nerfed version is considered harder than Bloodbath, the original and unnerfed version is arguably slightly easier than Sonic Wave. Unnerfed Phobos was formerly believed to be impossible for a long time.
On 12 May 2016, KrmaL (named Krazyman50 at the time) verified Phobos legitimately on 60Hz. The level has since been re-uploaded under his account, where it regained its Demon rating. Surv beat it later on 23 May 2016, and Atomic beat it on 18 August 2016. Since then, multiple other players have beaten it, some of the earliest victors being SoulsTRK, Sunix, BlassCFB and Skullo.
A super-buffed remake of the unnerfed version of Phobos, Deimos, was created by EndLevel and verified by npesta on 17 February 2019.[1] A sequel, also named Deimos, was created in 2.1 by ItsHybrid and verified by Doggie on 5 August 2023.
History[]
The creation of Phobos[]
Phobos began as a mega-collaboration hosted by a former Top 20 player named GMTSean. He posted it in a Geometry Dash Facebook group back in April 2015 (note the group being original with more than 21,000 members).
GMTSean has given twenty places for players and creators; each was chosen based on their skills and abilities in the game and creating levels.
One of the first players to get involved was Tygrysek, then later was Andromeda. As soon as later on, many bigger names get involved in the mega-collaboration, including Smokes, Jo2000 and Skitten. However, contacting them would be difficult.
In May 2015, the mega-collaboration, now named Phobos, was fully built. The team tried to contact Riot to verify; however, he declined the offer and focused on Bloodbath instead.
In early 2.0, the level received an extension, one part being decorated by WOOGI1411. After that, the team began to ask questions about who could verify this intense mega-collaboration. Some of the creators tried to verify it themselves. The furthest one was Riqirez, who reached 50% after nearly 30,000 attempts. However, one day later, Tygrysek informed the team that he had verified it. The level was then uploaded on 25 November 2015 and featured Demon almost instantly.
Hacking accusations drama[]
However, hacking accusations started to arise, as rumours stated Tygrysek could not have possibly beaten such an Extreme Demon without footage in just a day. One of the first players to expose him was Loogiah, a popular Italian player and creator in-game. One day, he and Riot tipped off RobTop that Tygrysek hacked the level. It, in turn, caused Tygrysek to be threatened that the level would be unrated unless it was verified legitimately.
On 29 November 2015, Tygrysek deleted the level's content and made it a tiny-length free Demon with an apology message.[2] The description was changed to this:
'I'm Sick of this thing. It was supposed to be a fun megacollab, it ended bad. Sorry for hacking this... RobTop please remove it.'
The content of the level was changed to a message that said this:
'Have fun. Sorry for hacking this... We (The Phobos Team) wanted it to be out as fast as Possible... And it ALL went wrong... Once again, sorry...'
However, a moment before the level was going to get unrated, Tygrysek had a change of heart and returned to the level, this time nerfing it to Bloodbath difficulty. The level remained Demon rated. However, RobTop was later tipped off again, and the level got unrated and was deleted from the servers. This removal caused several rumours that one of the level's creators had a copy of the original level.
Aftermath and re-verification[]
Since then, nobody tried this challenge, although several hacked copies have been floating around. WOOGI1411 once posted a cut video of Tygrysek's nerfed version, which was nerfed in five places (GMTSean, Palery, Kubson, Andromeda and Riquirez), and WOOGI's popularity made many people look into it, causing even more players seeking the unnerfed version.
In early 2016, KrmaL took on the project of being the first to beat Phobos, using the nerfed version by Tygrysek. He verified it after a few months of practice and 30,000 attempts on 12 May 2016. The level was rated and featured by RobTop on 20 May 2016. Soon after, Surv beat it on stream, and it immediately placed at #2 on the Demonlist, just below Bloodbath (at that time).
Legacy[]
Phobos was considered in its peak as one of the hardest levels in Geometry Dash. At that time, some of its earliest victors were Surv, Atomic, BlassCFB and SoulsTRK.
The level's popularity has also caused it to spawn numerous sequels aptly named Deimos, notably the Deimos mega-collaboration hosted by ItsHybrid. EndLevel has also created a harder remake of the unnerfed Phobos with the same name, which was verified by npesta and published on 18 February 2019.[3] Additionally, GDSkele is hosting a similar mega-collaboration, setting for the hardest level in the game.[4]
Gameplay[]
- 0-4% (KoBaZz): The level starts with a confusing but fairly simple mini-cube part, requiring crucial timing, filled with fake orbs and gravity portals. It is probably the easiest part of the level.
- 4-8% (Tandrii) (a.k.a. Honeyb): The background and ground turn dark, and the player will enter a wave section, which is moderately hard, Acropolis-like, and requires crucial timing. The coloured spikes in Honeyb's part will slightly change to black and white, and then a cube part that lasts for a second, and the player enters into a hard mini-wave segment. A sawblade blocks the seemingly obvious route, requiring the player to go under, and then Honeyb's name appears.
- 8-13% (TechneT): Another cube part similar to KoBaZz's follows up but is slightly harder and needs more crucial timing. The design of his part is similar to those of 'Steam Chamber' by Darnoc. It also resembles his Demon-rated level, called Mechanic Megaforce.
- 13-19% (GMTSean): This is a confusing UFO sequence with orbs. Here, the player requires precise timing and jumps to pass. This part was one of the few parts to be nerfed due to being nearly impossible.
- 19-26% (Jobet): This is a ship sequence at half-speed with somewhat tight spaces. This tricky ship sequence has numerous gravity changes, a couple of mirror portals, speed changes and gravity portals that easily confuse inexperienced players. After this, Jobet's name will be seen.
- 26-33% (NiTro451) (formerly Eduard0): This is a wave segment that is extremely difficult due to tight spaces, sawblades and double-speed.
- 33-39% (iBlade): The player enters a ball sequence. This part is tricky and requires more timing and jumps, especially switching gravity at the end of platforms to avoid a spike on the other side, followed by a very tight wave segment with gravity portals. iBlade's name moves up letter by letter at the start of this wave segment, suggesting it was added during Update 2.0. In addition, iBlade's part closely resembles WOOGI's part in The Ultimate Phase.
- 39-45% (Palery): This is a mini-ship sequence with numerous speed changes, designed to easily throw off the player. A triple-speed mini-wave with invisible slopes follows, but that segment is rather simple compared to some parts of the level (originally, the first double-speed portal had a pink orb spike jump, but that was nerfed because it was ridiculously hard).
- 45-49% (Smokes): The level's color suddenly changes to green. The player enters a mini-ball segment. This part has many precise timings, and most of the part is composed of fake lining and invisible platforms. Then comes a UFO segment with a purple background.
- 49-54% (Jo2000): The player enters a half-speed ship sequence with orbs, gravity portals and extremely tight spaces. Halfway through, the player goes mini and completes the ship. His part ends with a hard triple-speed wave segment featuring a gravity switch halfway.
- 54-58% (DreamEater): This part mainly consists of a straight fly segment with size and gravity portals everywhere, though there are also many timing-based orbs that the player needs to hit to pass this part. There is a brief wave section towards the end.
- 58-61% (Tygrysek): This is a triple-speed dual ship sequence that briefly becomes half-speed in the middle.
- 61-63% (Iqrar99): Afterwards, the player enters a short but difficult half-speed mini-UFO/mini-ball mixed dual segment, similar to that of Ditched Machine.
- 63-68% (Skitten): A normal speed ship sequence with clusters of sawblades. The part has many gravity portals and yellow orbs that are hard to time. The player suddenly changes to a UFO with numerous gravity portals and even more orbs.
- 68-72% (Kubs0n): In the old version, this part starts with a mini-ship sequence, then changes to a mini-wave leading through tight spaces, difficult timings and hard-to-notice objects. The mini-wave gameplay is slightly similar to one part from Sonic Wave. Instead of being in the mini-wave in the nerfed version, the player is a regular wave instead.
- 72-75% (Andromeda): It resembles the looks of Andromeda's collaboration Lunatic Doom Machine, filled with crosses, an upside-down half-speed ship sequence and a one-block-wide straight fly. The ship was originally mini. However, it became a normal ship due to Kubs0n's part being nerfed with a normal ship/wave segment.
- 75-79% (Caernarvon725): This part was created after the release of Update 2.0. It includes a ball sequence featuring many tight spaces, speed- and size portals and crucial timing. The name 'Caernarvon' can be seen towards the end.
- 79-82% (Razur): His name appears, then the player is transported up to a short but hard UFO part with moving obstacles requiring somewhat difficult timings.
- 82-90% (WOOGI1411): The player will enter a ship sequence, then a short ball segment, then a second ship sequence. A rotating group of sawblades, being rotated by a move trigger that needs to be dodged, if not, can be hit. This part requires a notorious amount of straight fly and is quite difficult. A robot part will be seen but only last for a second. Then, it returns to a brief triple-speed cube segment. A 'Take a Break' text will appear (originally 'Wow, you made it far U nub, DIE.' The background was grey, and the text did not move).
- 90-100% (Riqirez): The last part is a triple-speed mini-ship sequence, with a cluster of small invisible spikes and blocks, portals, pads and orbs can be seen, resembling Neptune's Demon level Doomsday II (albeit in ship mode). There are crosses made out of gradient decoration that can be seen. Beforehand, it was a near-impossible non-sync mini-ship/mini-cube section, but now it is only a mini-ship after the nerf. Then, the level ends with a hall of the people who participated in the mega-collaboration, with the sentence: 'Congratulations! You have completed one of the hardest megacollabs in GD!' Underneath all the texts, 'Hacked by Tygrysek' appears, quickly replaced by "Verified by Krazy." It was initially 'Verified by Tygrysek'.
Trivia[]
- The password for the level is 318008.
- The level contains 26,212 objects.
- The level is 2m 13s in length.
- The level was initially placed at #6 on the Geometry Dash Demonlist on 4 January 2017, above Hatred (#7) and below Athanatos (#5).
- Phobos swapped places with Bloodbath on 27 May 2017. This change pushed Bloodbath out of the Top 10 for the first time.
- However, this change was reverted on 4 June 2017 as it was later swapped with it again.
- Phobos swapped places with Bloodbath on 27 May 2017. This change pushed Bloodbath out of the Top 10 for the first time.
- It is currently #33 on the Low Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist, above Ziroikabi (#34) and below super probably level (#32).
- This was considered one of the hardest levels of its time because the level is extremely long and because of its abundance of difficult timings and straight fly. Some consider it to be on par with or even harder than Bloodbath.
- Although Bloodbath was harder than Phobos before, it was no longer considered as Phobos is officially harder than Bloodbath.
- The song "Phobos" by Solkrieg contains several voice lines. "Critical Error" can be heard at Jobet's part, "Step Forth and be recognized" at Dream Eater's part, "Who of you shall rise" at Iqrar99's part, and "Blood for the blood god" at Andromeda's part.
- Contrary to the song, no Greek or Roman god represents blood.
- BrianTheBurger currently has the least number of attempts in Phobos, with 3,268 attempts.
- However, even though he had 4,824 attempts on the level, hotball1 beat Phobos in ~500 attempts on 144Hz, meaning 1: he spent 4,324 attempts on 60Hz, and 2: if including attempts on one single refresh rate, hotball1 has the record on only one refresh rate on Phobos with ~500 attempts.
- Aeidux and DryBones were initially planned to be in the collaboration, but they never replied to requests.
- Riqirez's part was originally a near-impossible dual segment (it used to be a mini-ship/mini-cube mixed dual) until Tygrysek re-verified the level and nerfed it to a mini-ship sequence. However, the dual segment is still present in Deimos.
- The verification of Phobos was once KrmaL's most popular video, having 3.8 million views. The record is now being held by his verification video for xo, higher by a few margins.
- There is an error on Jo2000's part, an accidentally deleted background block.
- The parts nerfed from the original are GMTSean, GW Palery, Kubs0n and Riqirez.
- EndLevel may have completed Phobos off-camera and has video evidence, but it was hacked.
- GMTSean, one of the creators of Phobos, has also uploaded the unnerfed version of Phobos (there is a secret way at the end of Kobazz's part to allow GMTSean to easily verify the level).
- During the verification progress of Phobos, Jobet put a secret way near his signature to make verifying much easier, which caused a music bug. This bug was later resolved.
- Although Conical Depression looked near-impossible and was claimed by KrmaL to be his possibly hardest beaten level in general, Phobos is still his third hardest level ever beaten. Thus, general opinions are already claimed that Phobos is harder than Conical Depression. The hardest level he has currently beaten is xo, followed by Black Blizzard.
- Surv also claimed that this was the second hardest Demon he had ever beaten at the time, leading some people to claim that the level is easier than Bloodbath.
- Phobos is the son of Mars/Ares, similar to Deimos, the sequel to Phobos and another son of Mars/Ares.
- In Greek mythology, Phobos is the god of fear, while Deimos is the god of terror.
- In real life, Phobos and Deimos are both moons of the planet Mars.
- This level is criticized for its "unfun" gameplay, for example, GMTSean's part and the dual parts.
- While verifying, KrmaL's thumb started turning blue from all the clicking.
- Chubs Dubs is the first person who has beaten Phobos on mobile, beating it on 15 March 2021.
- Stormfly is the first legitimate victor of the unnerfed version of Phobos on 24 April 2021.[5]
- Unnerfed Phobos is the 20th former Top 1 in the game's history.
- The placement of Nhelv on 13 May 2021 pushed Phobos into the Legacy List of the Demonlist.
